I’m Not in Pain, So Why Do I Need to Have My Tooth Removed?

It can be somewhat alarming to learn that you need to have a tooth removed. It’s understandable if you’re experiencing a lot of pain, but what if there is no discomfort at all? Why would any dentist suggest tooth extraction if the person is feeling just fine? What you may not realize is that pain doesn’t have to exist. It’s only one symptom of many that point to a serious oral health problem. Discover why you’re being recommended for this type of procedure and what it can mean for your overall health.

The Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Although pain is the primary indicator of a more serious oral health problem, it is not the only one. A change in your bite, bad breath, inflammation, and other similar signs can all serve as symptoms that require professional treatment.

But if you go in for a checkup only to learn that you need to have a tooth removed, you may wonder why, especially if you’re feeling no pain.

Here are a few reasons why:

An Infection is to Blame

When your body’s immune system is suppressed, you may not be able to fight off an infection quite as easily. While discomfort is a typical sign of a problem, it may not be present if significant decay has worsened enough to effectively damage and “kill” the nerve that normally signals pain. The tooth may need to come out.

Advanced Gum Disease is the Culprit

If bacteria attack the soft oral tissues inside the mouth, inflammation and tenderness occur as well as bleeding when brushing and flossing. If left to progress, the infection can cause gum pockets to form while also damaging teeth and the underlying jawbone. Periodontitis as it is known can cause teeth to become loose, in which case, they may need to be removed.

Overcrowded Teeth Pose a Threat

Undergoing orthodontic treatment requires having adequate space in your mouth for your teeth to move into proper alignment. If it appears that your pearly whites are sitting too close together, your dentist may suggest removing one or more teeth. This will allow your smile to move into position while wearing braces.

The idea of having a tooth removed for any reason may not sound like something you want to agree to, but it’s important to remember that your dentist will never suggest this type of treatment if there is no valid reason. Your oral and overall health may be at risk for more serious complications, so trust the expertise of your dental team, as you can count on them to look out for your best interest.
